10pm last night, just returned home from taking david to (finally!) see the matric reloaded
<purr>matrix at the imax…mmmmmm!</purrs>

the phone rings. i pick it up.

mom: are you all prepared for the storm?

me: what storm?

mom: <manic laugh> the tropical storm about to slam into you!

me: uh, nope.

mom: well, you need to go to the store RIGHT NOW and get tape for your windows and boards and food and (the list continues as i zone out)

me: ok, mom, i’ll go get on that right now…thanks for the call.

i turn on the TV. david comes in looking incredulous.

me: tropical storm headed this way

TV: orleans parish has adopted a Wait And See policy regarding….advice to citizens – excercise extreme caution in your commute tomorrow morning, avoid travelling, stay home tomorrow, don’t drive through high water.

david: <shrugs> be careful in your commute in the morning.

david walks away, i turn off the TV.

from a conversation i was just having about new orleans weather…

for those of you who do not know what summer in nola means, it is something like this:

it rains like its the end of the world for about an hour.

everything starts to flood.

and then the rain stops, the sun comes out and only those with gills can survive.

poor poegirl13 and those helping her move as we speak. they might be able to make it in a raft!

road trip cancelled….

i should be happy, but mostly i am just annoyed. i really didn’t *want* to drive 12 hours to houston and back *again* this week, but i was mentally resigned to it and had busted my ass to be prepared for it.

and on the day i am supposed to leave, it turns out the marketing director can’t fly in, so the meetings have been put off til after the 4th.

additional annoyance comes from the fact that it will most likely happen while allea is visiting us. <grumbles> perhaps i will take her on my road trip if she is game.

so now i have to call my mom back and cancel dinner. i have to call liz back and cancel lunch.

i think perhaps after some breakfast and coffee, i will be less cranky. its not like i don’t have a TON of work i need to get done anyway. i should be thankful to have a more leisure week than i expected.

yah. but i hate cancelled plans.

connecting and healing

in the last week, i have been experienced a long-shut door bursting open when i least expected it. a person who i have deeply regretted my behavior with and toward has made contact with me after 5 years of stony silence, and i find the opportunity to reflect on our time togther and just how deeply he touched my life in so short a time to be cleansing and healing in ways i had only hoped for over the years.

for reasons that defy logic or analysis, this person – in 6 months together – has stayed an active part of so many of my memories for 5 years that it is uncanny. my friends who remember that time in my life would undoubtedly laugh at my joy at reconnecting, but i am not sure if many people understand the profound impact he had on me. and just how much of who i am now is a result of knowing him.

even if i never spoke to him again after today, having the chance to say the 101 things i have longed to say for five years has been enough. its like i can breathe again. i feel one step closer to having absolved some of my bad behaviour of the past. to no longer be hated by someone you love is a wonderful feeling.

travel-weary

well, we’re back.

we skated in from houston at 9pm last night, hungry and pretty damn tired. i was fussy that we were going to miss die_electric‘s show at the howling wolf, but there was just no way we were going to make it 🙁 i hope it went well!!!

the time in houston went really well. the project and client are in a different league than i have worked in as a freelancer…its corporate, structured, and involves more dog-and-pony that i usually do. but its not uber-corporate…my main contact is the VP of IT and he is all about letting professionals do their job instead of telling them how to do it, and his personality is low-key, while his expectations are high. its like my dream environment. i think, should this project come through, it will be really interesting and lead to other doors opening that would be very helpful.

so this week, i frantically catch up, continue juggling my projects, and next week, i go *back* to houston to present the design comps. by the end of next week, i am going to be so wiped out!

on other notes, it would seem that we will be having another span of Visitors and Travel. On our dancecard:

July 6 – 12 – allea is with us
july 23 – 30 – our friends chris and melissa from olympia are here
aug 9-14 – we are in austin
aug 15 – 24 – we are leaving all pretenses of work behind for our trip to colorado

and then i suspect the revolving door will be attached to our home, bec come sept, the weather will return to sane and our friends will have a hankering for nola again 🙂

i will expound on the colorado trip soon…but for now, i have plants to water, breakfast to cook and more work than god (i say that alot. i think its my new tagline)
