it’s hard to believe we have only been home 4 weeks. so much has been going on and it leaves me feeling a little breathless.

its the first good rainy day we have had in a while, and at the moment, i am invoicing clients, filing paperwork and generally trying to get organized. my boy is working on the futon behind me, the kittens are curled up together asleep on their heatingpadbed and zephyr is napping on the warm UPS box under my desk, not 3 feet away from them.

my heart is all warm with love.

so today yielded definitive evidence as to who is going to be the biggest troublemaker as the meeps get older.

jack.

my little pirate Gets it.

this morning, he was mewing very insistently at my feet as i cooked breakfast. when i picked him up, he was not at all interested in me…his eyes were roaming the counter and everything yet undiscovered on it.

so i would set him on the floor, he would eye the cabinets, get up on his hind legs, see if there was any realistic climbing avenue, and then mew again.

i would pick him up, he was strain toward counters…wash, rinse, repeat.

and then this afternoon, he found his way around the blockade we created on the balcony to the stairs (i had moved my strawberry plants).

he was retrieved and the blockade was fortified.

jack recognized the new brick, knew exactly where he had made his escape before, spent much time studying it, and made the same mew of insistence that New Territory Should Be Explored.

he also studied the edge of the balcony near the stair railing, mentally calculating if he could make it.

he is one sharp little tack.

god help us and his conniving kittymind as he gets more coordinated, stronger and more clever 🙂

today, we needed to take the meeps with us to olympia while the house was sprayed for carpenter ants.

since their ride home didn’t really count, this was their first test at being road warriors, and i was soooooo silly to forget the camera at home – next time, there will be plenty of pictures.

why?

because jack was *all* about being up in the windows, usually on david’s side, standing on his arm with his front paws on the side door or standing in his lap with his paws on the steering wheel.

really.

he is living up to his reputation of Captain Jack Sparrow 🙂

the cute was unbearable.

ponce was also very much about looking out windows, and they both alternately roamed, looked out windows, curled up on top of our shoulders and just watched the world go by.

overall, the day in olympia, in new spaces and traveling with them was worry-free, easy and fun.

our other first today was particularly sweet.

up until now, ponce has purred a lot, but jack hadn’t get managed a purr.

today jack officially found his purr 😀 david and i both got to experience it at different points in the day.

there was much glowing.

and so it begins…

this weekend saw completion of the 3 huge outside projects we had scheduled.

we were blessed this weekend to have the delightful company and hard labor of lexicat, wingology, and alex’s fabulous roommate, Dustin. they made our lives so much easier 🙂 there were also many pictures of kittens and fun, which i’ll point to soon.

all in all, i am thrilled to have those projects well on the road. now there will be nurturing, which is the fun part!

kitten pictures abound, but so does work, so i’ll post those later this week.

so in the 24 hours we have had our little guys, their personalities are shining through 🙂

last night was a ton of pouncing, followed by each of them crawling on top of a human and passing out for a half-hour nap, and then more pouncing.

the orange tabby is the explorer – out looking, seeing,, and doing. he is also the big lover, giving kisses, snuggling and grooming. he found his name first – ponce de leon (with, of course, the nickname “pounce”).

the tuxedo kitty was harder. we started calling him monkey for his overwhelming desire to climb and pick precarious precipices to dangle from (quite agilely, by the way). we agreed that monkey could be nothing more than a nickname and so the task at hand was to find a cool monkey name 🙂

and this morning, after reading the ladies’ comments about his dashing charm, we stumbled across “you named the monkey jack??” – and how better can we pay homage to both sexy johnny depp and work in the monkey factor, than by calling him jack?

so ponce and jack it is 🙂

how did we get them?

i had contacted pierce county animal rescue, who happened to reply that they would be at petsmart on friday at 10am with many boy littermates. so we showed up shortly after they opened, and the sheer quantity of kitten was overwhelming 🙂 however, these guys had so much personality and were so friendly and alert, the choice was pretty easy.

zephyr is doing better than hobbes did 🙂 he is rather hissy and keeping his distance, but he did choose to spend a chunk of the evening with the family, though observing the insanity from a distance. i think he’ll warm up in time.

however, now the garden calls (and calls and calls) so i am off to spend the day taming our domain!
