Acquaintances

The din of the restaurant was that perfect hum, a busy beehive with a hypnotic undertone. I looked up from my plate to frown in concern at Kitty.

"So he isn't doing so well, huh?"

"No. His collarbone is starting to heal but he missed so much work that he is really behind on his bills. He is never around. I just don't know what to do with him!"

I smiled, "Well, you know, moms are the last ones they let help them. Is he still hurting a lot?"

Andrew's head snaped up.

"For God sake, he is fine. He spends all of his time at his new girlfriend's place and from the looks of it, she is taking care of business. I can't stand to listen to you worry about him when the only person he ever thinks about his himself!"

Kitty shifted her eyes to him and then looked down, studying the eggs on her plate.

The world froze.

I stared at him and slowly asked, "His 'girlfriend'? Jonathan has a girlfriend?"

Andrew looked at me like a deer in headlights and stutters, "Well, um...yah, I thought you...knew. That's why I didn't get why you...still care so much...."

He looked helpless.

I couldn't see straight.

"How long has he had this girlfriend?"

He started to squirm. "I dunno...a few months? Look, I am not really even sure its his girlfriend! I mean....he brought her car to the shop to detail it....and I figured no man scrubs a chicks car unless he is trying to impress her....um..." He trailed off, his foot already firmly in his mouth.

I took a deep breath. "What is her name?"

"Oh, I don't really know....she is just some..."

I stared resolutely across the table at him and quietly asked again. "Andrew. What is her name?"

He looked down, "Something that starts with an 'A', I think..."

I closed my eyes and choked out, "Andrea?"

They both stared at me.

"You know her?"

I grimaced and nodded.

"He was kind enough to introduce me to her a few weeks before he left."
